AD notes :

Shooting a period piece is always a challenge: story took place in 1984 – 1987

The second shooting period was supposed to take place in South Africa instead of Belgium. The producers lost their funding a week before shooting started in Germany. This meant for us to prep a 31 day shoot parallel to a 29 shoot day traveling production in Germany including scouting many locations, building a huge set piece in a new country

The script work was very delicate, as we were portraying a real person in a real story. In addition the family around the main character is still alive and was part of the story. One of the closest person to the main character in our story pulled out and didn’t want to be part of the series very close to shooting start so we had huge script revisions, locations that were new or got cut, new roles etc. all of that had a big impact on the schedule.

Many many locations in many different cities throughout Germany and Belgium. Location moves within Brussles are most effective on foot due to crazy traffic

The key first AD took on the project on the first day of tech survey since the former first AD had to leave to project.
At the same time we learned that we’ve lost the South Africa funding and started the scouting in Brussles on that very day.
We had to make time in the schedule to travel to Brussles for directors scouting within the Germany shooting period which was very stressfull. Handling all of this was only possible due to the most incredible 2nd AD and Crowd ADs. Every AD understood what was happening and stepped up their game!
Also: Belgium has the best catering EVER!
